Bling it On
"Pimp your site" with popfly.
Use popfly to "Pimp your site".
Popfly
Popfly is the fun and easy way to build and share mashups, gadgets, and Web pages. It’s made up of online visual tools for building Web pages and mashups and a social network where you can host, share, rate, comment and even remix creations from other Popfly users.
Popfly is free. Join up and start creating mashups. Carousels like the one below can be on your site in about 15 minutes.
<iframe style='width:100%; height:400px;' src='http://www.popfly.com/users/batFINGER/PWS%20gallery%20RSS%20to%20carousel.small' frameborder='no' allowtransparency='true'></iframe>
This can also be seen on Les Brown's Art page. His site is derived from the My Web Pages Starter Kit. When he adds a gallery to his page, the popfly widget reads the RSS generated and feeds the url's of the images into the carousel. This control could be further tweaked by adding a queryString block to get the id of the gallery, and build the RSS link, and also by making the links to the thumbnail images, dramatically reducing the time to load, but alas seriously reducing the quality when viewed in full screen mode. It might be easier to fiddle the RSS code on the page to improve the description field and add a link to the image there.
There are many blocks to play around with once you have an incoming feed. If you have multiple galleries on your site you could randomly pick one image from each and throw them into a carousel linking to the gallery home page. It's nice to get effects like this so quickly. Part of me would prefer to write my own carousel in XAML, i get some productivity quickly with popfly.
Ofcourse all of this can be developed using flash for instance... but ya gotta pay for that. Another benifit of popfly and hence, i suppose, XAML and silverlight is that it uses existing technologies, javascript and xml, which as web designers you'd be familiar with.
If you like the stuff but don't want to get your head around it I can create and add popfly content to pimp your site for a small fee.
